The ECAT is a short form for Energy Catalyzer. It is basically a
table-top fusion reactor, i.e. a fusor, that can produce nuclear size
energy output at room temperature or temperatures close to room
temperature. It utilizes low energy nuclear reactions, so called LENRs,
to generate vast amounts of energy. The LENR process utilized is called

The ECAT was invented by the Italian engineer named Andrea Rossi who has
spent his entire professional career in the energy production field.
For many years he was trying various combinations of fuels and reactor
geometries until he finally discovered the Rossi Effect – a fuel
combination that would yield vast amounts of excess energy for a long

In short, the ECAT produces the energy through The Rossi Effect which is
a newly discovered LENR process involving Lithium and Hydrogen to which
Leonardo corporation holds the IP rights, see patents. This LENR
process is exothermic, which means that it produces excess energy. The
mass energy of the rest product, Helium, is less than the mass energy of
Lithium and Hydrogen alone and this excess energy is released as heat

Updated Aug 2015: The ECAT 1 MW currently operates as a Pilot
Plant gathering useful data to feedback in preparation for the mass
production which is planned to start late 2016 to early 2017. The first
Pilot Plant is undergoing a certification process where certification
